Halong Bay (also Ha Long bay) is a bay located in the Gulf of Tonkin, 170 kilometres east of Hanoi, in north Vietnam near the border with China. The bay has a 120 kilometre long coastline and is approximately 1,500 square kilometres in size. "Vinh Ha Long" (Halong Bay) means "Bay of the Descending Dragon" in the Vietnamese language. Ha means "descending" and Long means "dragon" in Sino-Vietnamese.
The bay dotted with 3000 limestone islets rising from emerald waters, is the best known natural wonder of Vietnam. Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The site's outstanding scenic beauty is complemented by its great biological interest. The islands feature endless numbers of beaches, grottoes, and caves. Ha Long was World Heritage listed by UNESCO at the 18th meeting of the Committee of the World Heritages of UNESCO (in Thailand on December 17th, 1994). It is one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations.
With tourist forming a great part of income for the locals, tourist transportation is the main source of business for the bay. Ha Long's tourist boats are made mostly of aluminium and they are used to ferry tourist to and from their house boats to the port, or used for enchanting tours in the beautiful caves of Ha Long. In the past 2 stroke engines (twin 85 AETL) were used widely for transportation, however since the introduction of 4 Stroke engines in Ha Long, more and more operators are beginning to see the benefit of 4 Stroke Outboards.
Mr Ba, boat operator of the Indochina Sails explains, "In the past when we were travelling in the caves, the smell of the exhaust and the noise of the 2 stroke engines were extremely distracting and uncomfortable for our guests. After making the switch to 4 Stroke (F150A), there is no more smell of exhaust, the engine is extremely silent and most important of all....No Complains!"
Minh Duc, Minh Long's Authorised dealer for Yamaha Marine as had a long presence of over 10 years in Hai Phong's industrial city, 1 hour's drive from Ha Long bay. This enables them to provide quick service to any of the boat operators who depend on their Outboard as the main source of income. Mind Duc regularly visits the bay which makes them a familar face to all boat operators in the area.
Next time you are in Ha Long hop on to one of the beautiful tourist boats to bring you on an unforgettable journey around the beautiful Ha Long Bay.
